Lucha Underground Renewed For Second Season

Lucha Underground Season 2

Wrestling fans can breathe a sigh of relief, and pump their fist in the air with joy – Lucha Underground has been greenlit for a second season.

After the series concluded in early August, the fate of the series was up in the air, and there was a fan movement to get the series on Netflix for a second season. It will now return home to Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network.

The wrestling series, produced by Emmy-winning producer Mark Burnett, was the surprise hit of 2015 for wrestling fans. It was an odd concept – the show would be a hybrid of telenovela melodrama, and lucha libre shot on a closed set as opposed to an arena, or traditional wrestling venue. The concept was very reminiscent of the cult favorite Wrestling Society X, but that was remembered more for its novelty value than anything else.

Lucha Underground on the other hand became a sensation due to its wrestling – plain and simple it became one of the best episodic wrestling shows in North America. The series showcased high-flying action from Americans like Prince Puma, Brian Cage, and Johnny Mundo, and Mexican luchadors like Fenix and Drago. There was also elements of pure violence, including the ‘season finale’ featuring Vampiro/Ian Hodgkinson and Pentagon Jr., which still being talked about as one of the most violent TV matches in forever.

Lucha Underground will return to the El Rey Network (check local cable providers for availability) in early 2016.
